This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in our school in the South Bronx are an incredible mix that reflects the world we live in today. Some of our students come from families that have been in the South Bronx for generations, while others have recently arrived and, at the tender age of 8 or younger, having grown up in Honduras, Dominican Republic or a variety of countries in Africa, have begun to learn a new culture and a new language.
These kids amaze me every day as they navigate this complicated world and almost always arrive with a smile.
If you looked at our kids on any given day, you would not believe that they live in the poorest urban congressional district in the United States. They are always eager and ready to learn.
My Project
Our students have been through a difficult time, like all children, dealing with this pandemic. After learning remotely in the Spring of last year and then again this winter, a reduced number are finally back to in person learning. However life is not back to what it was one year ago.
One issue that we are dealing is that, due to safety measures, the students are not permitted to use the water fountains to quench their thirst.
Instead they are given a plastic cup that they can fill and must immediately throw away. The purchase of water bottles will ensure that all of our students have access to water and will reduce plastic waste.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
