My students need notebooks, dividers, labels, and binder pockets to have a standardized set of writing tools in order to have equal opportunities to learn to become great writers.

My Students
Not all writing supplies are created equally, but my students deserve to have equal opportunities. Standardized writing tools will allow students to learn in our Writer’s Workshop without economic disparity coming into play.
I teach an amazingly diverse group of 3rd/4th graders.
Our students come from both ends of the economic spectrum, from the comfortable middle class neighborhood surrounding the school to trailer courts where kids aren’t always sure they’ll get dinner. We have 54% of our kids receiving free or reduced price lunches. In addition we have children from countries such as Mexico, Korea, France, and the Congo, whose parents attend the university here. Our ethnic make-up consists of 51% Caucasian students with the other 49% being made up of Asian, Black, and primarily Hispanic students. But, what all these children have in common is their potential to become amazing writers if they have the right tools.
My Project
I currently have the beginnings of a Writer’s Workshop in place in our class. This includes lessons, writing time and peer critiques of their work. My hope is to inspire the children to become more authentic, organic writers, as opposed to just concentrating on punctuation and grammar. In order to make this a more complete experience I am requesting materials for a Writing Binder for each student, which would consist of a notebook for writing, a pencil pouch to hold writing tools and a binder to encase these items in one place. This would allow students to self-manage their writing environment and also have more time to spend on actual writing. By having all of their writing in one place it will also be possible for teachers, and the students, to monitor how their writing is progressing throughout the year. And, having identical writing tools for all of the students starts them out on an equal playing field to learn the lifelong skill of what one needs to be a writer.
The supplies for these writing binders will allow us to make our Writer’s Workshop more complete.
An organized system for keeping track of all writing tools will give us more time to focus on writing, rather than time spent searching out supplies. We hope to inspire not only those who already think they love writing, but even those who have never thought about it before. Perhaps the future Pulitzer Prize winner is in our classroom, only waiting for the right tools to unlock all their promise.
