I teach an amazingly diverse group of 3rd/4th graders. Our students come from both ends of the economic spectrum, from the comfortable middle class neighborhood surrounding the school to trailer courts where kids aren’t always sure they’ll get dinner. We have 54% of our kids receiving free or reduced price lunches. In addition we have children from countries such as Mexico, Korea, France, and the Congo, whose parents attend the university here. Our ethnic make-up consists of 51% Caucasian students with the other 49% being made up of Asian, Black, and primarily Hispanic students. But, what all these children have in common is their potential to become amazing writers if they have the right tools.
