I have the pleasure of working with the most vulnerable, under served students in the community. The students I serve range from the age of 3 to 10 years old. My students have experienced a range of traumas, some from the time they were born. Born into poverty, violence filled neighborhoods and a country where their lives are not valued. In our community mental health services are limited and hard to acquire.
There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful than anything that bleeds.
In my office, I am creating a safe space where students can release and explore their feelings. I am trying to create a space where students are able to be free in expressing their emotions while building self-care, self coping mechanisms. In order to do so, we need appropriate resources.
My Project
Children learn in a variety of ways. One of those ways is through literature. Being a therapist in an elementary school is tough due to communication barriers and differing levels of trauma. These are books that I will be able to utilize in therapy sessions with my students.These books are also educational for myself and expanding knowledge in a particular area. Play is also important for children opening up to communicate difficult things.
