I have the pleasure of working with the most vulnerable, under served students in the community. The students I serve range from the age of three to ten years old. My students have experienced a range of traumas, some from the time they were born. Born into poverty, violence filled neighborhoods and a country where their lives are not valued. In our community mental health services are limited and hard to acquire.
There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful than anything that bleeds.
In my office, I am creating a safe space where students can release and explore their feelings. I am trying to create a space where students are able to be free in expressing their emotions while building self-care, self coping mechanisms. In order to do so, we need appropriate resources.
My Project
These materials will help assist in quality behavior, play, and other therapeutic modalities. Students will learn social skills, coping skills and build healthy friendships. The sand and play materials will be used to facilitate child-centered play therapy. The sock puppets, dolls and other materials received will help an underfunded school be able to have a safe place to express themselves.
Children learn through play, these materials will foster great learning experiences.
Students will gain healing through child-centered play therapy and social skills groups. I will be able to provide structured boy/girl groups to put an end to bullying. Students will also express themselves through art therapy. Children will also benefit from a structured space to be themselves. I will be able to provide teachers with fidgets for students to focus on in class.
