My Students
I have the pleasure to teach 18 of the sweetest 4 and 5-year-old pre-kindergarten students. The students qualify for the program due to special needs, academic challenges, and family financial distress. Our school is a Title I school on the outskirts of Charlotte, NC.
Several of my students have special learning needs, and all have financial challenges making ends meet at home.
But, they all come to school ready to learn and love every minute of it. Our school is fortunate to have several garden boxes where students help plant and harvest crops. Hands-on learning is essential for giving students a sense of accomplishment. Your donation will help my students in the classroom and broaden their experiences.
My Project
In an effort to increase literacy and quality family time, each student takes home a book each night. Families are to read the book together. The more books that are read to children, the greater their vocabulary and reading comprehension. However, for half my class, this is difficult because the native language is Spanish. My classroom library is limited so more books written in Spanish are necessary. It is important for every family to be able to read together in their native language so that their native language is not lost. Preserving a family's heritage is of utmost importance for a child's self-esteem.
