Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Kindergarten in the heart of the Excelsior District in San Francisco, CA. My students come from very diverse backgrounds. My school is a Title I school and participates in the free reduced breakfast and lunch program. The majority of them are English Language Learners, speaking languages such as Russian, French, Tagalog, Spanish, and Cantonese. Most of my students' first experience in school is when they come into my class excited to learn.

There is never a dull moment when you enter my classroom.

My students are very energetic and happy to be at school. They come into the classroom everyday focused and thrilled to be with their classmates. We developed a tight-knit classroom community where we help and learn from each other. My students and I know our classroom as our "second home away from home" and that we are an addition to each other's family.

My Project

I often see my students press their ears against the classroom iPads and computer trying their best to hear the questions of the math and literacy games they play. Their goal is to get the correct answer but it's hard to get it if they can't hear what it's asking! I see them continually press the repeat button trying to get an accurate understanding of what the program is trying to say. Volumes are raised so high that it distracts other students at other math/literacy centers. Students will use the headphones so they can accurately hear the games they are playing. The headphones will provide the classroom with a quiet learning space for all.

"Can you make it louder?

I can't hear!" This is what students say when they are really involved with the educational video on screen but the volume is already at it's highest. My laptop lacks the ability to project sound in a really large classroom often losing some of my students interest as the sound is minimal. I play educational videos before or after a lesson in order to excite or conclude a teaching point. Being able to hear the videos is really important so the students can obtain multimodal learning, having technology as one of them. The speaker will help amplify the sound throughout the whole classroom.
