This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember staying awake at night with a flashlight just so you could finish reading a chapter of your favorite book? My 4th grade students rarely get a chance to experience the simple joy of reading a great book because they lack access to quality literature.
My students live in an urban area, with 95% of them qualifying for free/reduced priced lunch.
Their parents chose to send them to a charter school to get a better education than the public schools can provide. My students are polite and serious students. The majority of my students read below grade level and now that they are in 4th grade, that just isn't an option anymore. I taught them in 3rd grade and I cared for them so much that I knew that I needed to continue to teach them in 4th grade.
My Project
GreatSchools created a list of essential 4th grade literature. I looked over the list to find only 5 of the books in my classroom. I would like to purchase more of the books from that list so my students have access to fun, quality, age appropriate books. I currently have a great classroom library, but more of the books are more appropriate for 3rd graders. I need to freshen up my library with some books more appropriate for 4th graders.
I think that once my students have access to some of the best 4th grade books they will be unable to put their books down.
You will find them sitting under the covers with a flashlight unable to sleep until they finish one more chapter.
