Quality Instruments to Students in Poverty

My students need instruments that will work for decades, not just for 1 or 2 years.

My Students

My students are Native Americans living on a reservation. They are kind, funny, hard working, and they love music. It is astounding how fast they pick up on new skills on their musical instruments. Every year they are breaking new records for Native students doing new things. Last year we had students performing on Native Flute at State festival and we will again this year.

I am convinced that my students work harder than students anywhere in the world.

My students wake up very early in the morning to do chores and take a 1-2 hour bus ride to school. They then spend the day in classes, work their butts off in sports practice after school, take another 1-2 hour bus ride home, eat dinner, do their chores, and then stay up late studying or doing homework. After getting to bed late, they have to be ready early the next morning to do the same thing over again.

With such a busy schedule, students need to have access to the best resources in order to be successful.

My Project

I am asking for good quality clarinets and saxophones, along with the best kinds of reeds and ligatures for our current instruments. My students will be able to use these resources to be successful, rather than get frustrated by ones that don't work well. These ligatures won't break or bend like the cheap metal ones, and the reeds give off the best vibration for a good sound.

These students have to drive 3 hours or more to get to a music store.

Most do not have internet at home, and shipping companies don't recognize their addresses. Since most families are in poverty, they don't have money to buy school things and won't do it if asked. These set backs make it almost impossible for my students to buy their own instruments and accessories. The school needs to supply them for the students.

Our band was very close at qualifying for state last year. The more help we have to improve, then the better chance we have at making a huge impact in these students' lives and in the community.
