Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at an inner city school in Los Angeles that has a focus on science, math and technology. Our school is a Title 1 school and over 90% of our students qualify for free lunch. Our population is largely Latino and African American with a large population of English language learners.

My students are a joy to teach, and I am so lucky I get to spend my days with them.

They have challenges, like all students, but they have a passion for learning. I want to feed that passion, to keep it alive, so that they don't drop out school. My goal is that they make it to college, and that they learn the importance of working to make a positive impact on their community. In order to accomplish this they need meaningful experiences, like literature circles, to keep them engaged and to encourage them to think deeply about themselves and the world around them.

My Project

I am requesting a classroom set of the beloved classic, Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. These books are library bound and durable so they will stand up to many years of use. Most often in schools students only read short stories or chapters of books, seldom experiencing the complete literature experience that is transformative not only for the characters, but for the readers as well. With these books, the students will be able to read together, as well as take the books home. Through literature circles the students will analyze and interpret the readings and have opportunities to have a dialogue and debate with their peers. As a culminating project the students will write and produce a play based on the story, and they perform it for the school. It will be a motivating and authentic experience for them, and they will grow tremendously as readers by the end of this book.

This project is important because my students need to be competitive with other students who have already been exposed to much so much more literature at home and at school.

They are ready to become this type of analytical reader and with the resources, they will be successful at it in two languages. Donations to my project will give my students equal access to an enriched and challenging curriculum, which is the key for them to make it through high school and on to college.
