Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are third graders in a dual language immersion program in a low-income area where almost 80% are socio-economically disadvantaged and receive free or reduced-priced lunch. We are also a school composed of close to 65% of students who are emergent bilinguals. In other words, their first language is not English, so meeting the Common Core Standards takes extra work and very targeted instruction in both languages. However, we as staff, our students, and community are doing it with a lot of hard work! We set high academic and behavior expectations in both languages for all of our students because we want them to understand that being bilingual in this 21st century world is critical for their long-term success in the workforce.
We expect our students to succeed and encourage them to be lifelong learners.
We believe in the growth mindset approach to learning in which making a mistake is not viewed as failure rather an opportunity to learn. This approach helps to build up their grit and perseverance.
We are proud of our students, our community and our dedicated staff yet we need the supplies and materials to be better equipped to address our students' needs.
My Project
If this project becomes fully funded, I will be able to get a copy of this magazine into the hands of students with an eagerness to learn in two languages.
The ¿Qué tal?
magazine opens up great classroom discussion and collaborative conversations over issues facing Spanish-speaking countries around the world, including the United States. It's so awesome to watch students get excited about the topics presented in this magazine. From food to sports, music, and culture, this magazine is sure to broaden students' perspectives and literacy skills.
Engaging students in discussions about different cultures will also strengthen their socio-cultural competence skills which is one of the three pillars of our dual language immersion programs.
More than half of students from low‑income households
