My energetic and spirited 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students don't have many opportunities to experience the world outside of their neighborhood, but they are learning to connect with Spanish!
Through books, magazines, and technology they are able to grow and learn more about themselves and the greater world.
The more my students read, the more opportunities they will have to develop informed opinions about the issues that they will encounter outside our school walls. Our entire school population is minority students, and over 96% of them are low income. These aspects of their identify have formed most of their world view. However, many of our students will have the opportunity to go to high school outside of their neighborhood, and interact with a more varied group of peers. They live in one of the most diverse cities in the nation. I want them to be prepared for the range of opportunities that awaits them outside of this school and be excited to interact with more people who are not necessary like them. They are ready to dive into both fiction and non-fiction texts, and I am privileged to be able to help them do so.
¿Qué Tal? – “What’s up?” It’s a phrase most middle schoolers use daily. Scholastic’s ¿Qué Tal? is a magazine that shows students what’s up around the Spanish speaking world. Each issue is divided into eight sections which we can use in a multitude of ways. The “Mundo hispano” section covers cultural topics such as el Día de los Muertos, and even includes comparisons between Spanish, English, and French vocabulary. This is high order use of language in context – a fantastic way for students to learn.
Vibrant graphics and approachable content are highlights of this product.
The articles are short and broken into chunks that even my most novice students will be able to tackle. The first section “Actualidad” is about what’s happening right now- current events such as the release of FridaMojis, the Frida Khalo emojis that were designed this past spring. I know my students will be excited by articles like this, and they are more likely to retain vocabulary that they want to use and information that they want to talk about! Some of them may even be inspired to download such a product, enabling them to feel more connected with the Spanish-speaking world.
¿Qué Tal? also offers extra online content such as videos, MP3s, and a language lab that will further engage my students with the technology that they love. This product will help me teach my students so much about the world beyond our classroom in way that is both fun and rigorous.
