Kids need meaningful ways to interact with money and this project allows my students to do that.
The students in my classroom are high achieving 2nd graders who love to come to school.
Our school community is close knit and we enjoy the ever changing population. My students have diverse, cultural backgrounds and interests, but we all are excited to learn from one another. We enjoy working in collaborative groups and sharing our knowledge with each other. We enjoy using our critical thinking skills to evaluate new information and make judgments about what is important.
My Project
This is an exciting project where my students can put their financial literacy skills into action. I am requesting plastic coins to use as classroom money, several Ultimate Puzzles to be used as table group incentives, and storage organizers to hold both the student's money and the earned puzzle pieces. The Ultimate Puzzle is an endless puzzle that has multiple solutions. It is exciting for students because it can be solved with as few as 4 pieces, or with all 16 pieces.
My students will work together in order to purchase puzzle pieces and then collaborate to solve the puzzle in as many ways as they can. During the day, my students will earn different denominations of coins as they demonstrate ready, respectful, and responsible behavior. Each time an individual earns a dollar, they may trade their coins in for a puzzle piece to share with their table. As each piece is earned, it will be added to the table group's storage bin and used to create puzzle solutions.
This project is a meaningful way for my students to increase their financial literacy.
Each day they will be working with coins and practicing adding different denominations together to make a dollar. This project also promotes teamwork as my students must work together to earn their puzzle pieces and they must collaborate to create as many solutions as possible. What a fun way to practice math and apply problem solving strategies!
