My Students

Spatial Relations is one of those skills that is hard to teach to children. Puzzles are an easy way to gain children's interest in an easy spatial relations activity.

The 36 students in the Pre-K classrooms are 4-5 year old children.

The students in this classroom come from very diverse backgrounds. Many of these children speak a language other than English at home. The students come from low income homes, with 75% of them receiving free lunch. These students are excited to be at school daily and have a love of learning.

My Project

The Pre-K in our school district uses a literacy based curriculum as the main curriculum that we teach with daily. Learning throughout the day is connected in some way to those story books. Science is an area that is lacking and I am constantly trying to add it into the daily play. My students need new puzzles and a storage case to update the board puzzles. Puzzles like these with real pictures and science concepts will compliment the literacy curriculum. In the spring, we learn about growing and changing, such as insect life cycles. Having a puzzle the students can manipulate showing the parts of insects and spiders compliments one of the lesson plans. Young children learn through touching and playing with materials. This will foster communication as they play with their peers, bringing more learning into their play.

One thing missing in a lot of my student's homes are toys and books.

Often their families are refugees or first generation Americans. Being frugal means few toys and books. Puzzles are often difficult for some of the students. The puzzles we currently have are an older style, that is dated and much more difficult. The new puzzles will have real pictures that will foster a lot of interest and conversation among the students. They will learn while having fun.
