My Students

Children with eyes full of wonder and excitement enter the kindergarten classroom every year. They love the experience of play and hands-on learning coupled with literacy. Their little eager minds are ready for the challenges of school given the daily struggles the youngsters have already experienced even by the age of 5.

Children attending school in Camden, New Jersey are just like peers in the neighboring suburbs, but even as they enter kindergarten, many have not had the literacy, math, science, outdoor play, and language experiences of their peers just 8 miles from the school.

Poverty. Blight. Family struggles. Home struggles. Although the children in the inner cities have the strength of character beyond their years, it is wonderful to help give them more experiences. Help me help my students achieve!

My Project

Children need to see themselves in the items they play with during the day.

Help me give my students puzzles and memory games that contain people of color.

Puzzles and memory games are important for cognitive development. But even better, would be puzzles and memory games that contain pictures of people who look like you! These toys will help the children both academically, as well as socially emotionally. The puzzles and games would be used during center time when the children are exploring the environment and playing with diversity items.
