Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a low socioeconomic and often rough area of Los Angeles. Although they do not live in the best of neighborhoods, I strive to give them the best education for a brighter future.
My students are 25 energetic, inquisitive, smart 5-6-year-old students from diverse backgrounds in the dual language program.
They consist of 50% English Language Learners with a Latino background and 50% English only students with Latino and African American backgrounds. I love that my students are diverse in their backgrounds and in their Spanish abilities. They are able to learn from each other as they begin their journey into bi-literacy and bilingualism.
My Project
We work hard in kindergarten. We read, write, listen, discuss, problems solve, but kids need some down time too!
These puzzles will provide my students some "play" time, while still helping to develop their brains.
Working on a jigsaw puzzle has been shown to improve cognition and visual-spatial reasoning. It also helps students focus when putting pieces together and improves memory and problem solving. All of these skills will no doubt also help them with their learning in the classroom.
We currently have some puzzles in the classroom and I notice that students always gravitate to them when given the chance. I would love for them to have more variety in the classroom so they can build new puzzles together.
