My students are curious, creative, and love learning. They are constantly in motion, whether working together in small groups developing skits and props for Ancient Civilization presentations, individually rendering 3D objects in TinkerCAD in our MakerSpace, or playing baseball with the entire class. Students range in age from 10 to 12 and attend our public, suburban school.
"Making" empowers students and increases engagement and ownership of their own learning.
A variety of project options in our MakerSpace provide students choice in their student products (deliverables). Students enjoy working on projects that they select and have meaning for them; having a voice and choice makes a world of difference!
My Project
As education proponent and “Voice of the American Teacher” Robert John Meehan states, “Teaching children is an accomplishment; getting children excited about learning is an achievement.” Student excitement is palpable when learning is hands-on and minds-on; our MakerSpace provides students such opportunities. A Silhouette Cameo 3 will allow students to create custom paper crafts for projects, holiday cards, and year-long scrapbooks; create adhesive vinyl designs for event signage, promotional posters, and award stickers; design heat transfer designs for class t-shirts, project or baseball team hats, and personalized Mother's Day bags; cut fabrics for a variety of embellishments; and create templates for embossing or etching glass for parent/sibling gifts. The A2 light box tracers will enable three students at a time to create one-of-a-kind art pieces with a variety of mediums (pencil, ink, pastels, watercolors) after initially developing a sketch or outline of their ideas. Students practicing calligraphy and/or sketch noting will also benefit from the ability to trace using the light boxes.
