My Students
I am a fifth-grade teacher in a low socioeconomic community, in a classroom with diverse students. We have students who are trying to learn English, how to better control their emotional responses, or simply struggling to focus on the task at hand. My students come to school every day with a lot on their minds from home.
I make it my personal job to create an environment that makes it easier to guide their thoughts to only what is going on in our classroom.
Often times my students need to take unplanned breaks mid-day, or move or stand while they are completing an assignment. They need ways to wiggle and work through their distractions without creating a disruption. My goal is to supply my students with readily available resources in the room in order for them to focus and learn to the best of their ability.
I plan to make my classroom a welcoming, comfortable, and efficient environment for learning for each and every student that enters.
My Project
My school has a one-to-one ratio for students to technology. The only time of day they are guaranteed to interact face to face with other students is recess, however, during indoor recess, the students tend to play mindless button-mashing games instead of playing with one another. Due to weather, opportunities to get outside are often limited in the winter and spring. My hope is to make indoor recess be a technology-free time, just like outdoor recess, so students can continue to grow in all aspects of their persons.
By having imaginative, hands-on alternatives, students will be able to continue to stimulate their brains and collaborate with others in a fun and meaningful way.
I am looking to provide my students with a Brictek Building Materials Super Pack, Brictek Wheels and Accessories, Brictek Green Base, and Brictek Windows and Doors so students can use their imaginations to create vehicles and buildings. I am also asking for various marble run activities such as A-BA-Maze 2.0, Tumble Trax Magnetic Marble Run,Gal Marble Run, and Techno Gears Marble Mania to help inspire creative play through experiments with motion, stability, physics and art. Finally, students will be given ways to interact with one another through games like Set, Trouble, Sorry, Ker Plunk, Batik, Battleship, Connect 4, Uno, Perfection, and Guess Who. These activities will give my students things they can do one their own, should they need personal space; with a partner, should they be looking to work on their positive interactions with one particular classmate; or in small groups.
