My Students

I am an occupational therapist and I treat students from kindergarten through 5th grade. The students that I treat have a variety of diagnoses including autism, learning disabilities, and intellectual disabilities. All of my students are very unique and creative in their own ways. They inspire me to do the best I can to assist them in the development of living a more independent lifestyle. My treatment sessions usually focus on upper extremity strengthening, handwriting, fine motor skills, visual motor skills, and sensory integration.

My Project

The goal of a school based occupational therapist is to help students become more independent with their daily living skills. It is important for students to develop foundational skills in order to develop higher level skills. The goals my students work on include fine motor skills (handwriting/dexterity), visual motor skills (copying/cutting), and sensory processing.

This project will provide students with resources required in their journey towards independence.

Each and every student I work with will benefit from the items listed in my project. It is important for students with autism to explore and engage in sensory play. Unfortunately, sensory equipment can be very expensive. The students with sensory processing disorder will benefit from the fidgets and compression vests to increase their attention to tasks. These items will provide the specific sensory input that the student is craving. It can be either through tactile, auditory, proprioceptive, vestibular input. If these items can help assist in increase of attention to therapist directed tasks, their overall functional performance will improve. The puzzles and fine motor actives will help stimulate learning and assist students with developmental delays. The development of fine motor skills are essential in progress of handwriting. The items chosen are motivational and desirable to the students. I am sure my students will positively grow and mature by utilizing these items. Thank you!
