Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As designers, my students face the challenge of using and creating technology that helps them to apply their knowledge while solving real-world problems. My students need cutting-edge STEM experiences in the science classroom. My students engage in various design thinking projects where they work cooperatively to design, build, and test prototypes for various projects including skatepark models, underwater ROVs, gliders, soda bottle rockets, and more. These materials (3D printing filament and a 3D printer) are the basics that my students need to create and assemble their models.

"Grit, failure, iteration, collaboration, design" -- These are a few descriptors that could easily summarize my classroom.

My students are a diverse mix of middle school youth from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds. They are curious, inventive, and enthusiastic about the challenge of the various science projects they encounter throughout the year. They attend a school that is in a diverse city in California. My students take pride in their city, families, and cultures. They strive to do their best for themselves, their school, and their families.

In my engineering class, my students are faced with problems that allow them to draw on their personal experience, scientific research, and cooperative partnerships in and out of the classroom. PBL, or Project-Based Learning methods are used so that students are focused on a driving question that guides them through the project experience. Students learn critical thinking by using the engineering design process and design thinking. My students will use these materials to make a various engineering prototypes and models. Students will design elements online and 3D print them in class. Using the engineering design process, they will use data and feedback from their prototypes to iterate an improved version.
