Putting the Arts Back into Project-Based Learning

My students need art supplies like clay and sharpies to display their learning in a physical, tangible way. The clay will be used for our stop animation kits to "act" out the focus question answers in a tactile way.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Wilson's classroom raised $460

My Students

As a teacher, I am lucky to serve special needs to gifted fifth grade students in Arizona. We are a Title I community, serving students who are financially struggling, but also students whose parents see our school as a real-world learning environment. The community is as diverse as the needs of our world today.

Our students engage in multidisciplinary projects in teams to collect data, synthesize, design, build and rebuild, all while learning the key learning standards for fifth grade.

I work on a team of three to develop lessons and facilitate learning for students in our STEAM Design Academy. We are teaching our students to be college and career ready, starting at preschool. We're not training them for sixth grade. We're training them for life as scholars and future professionals. We even call them scholars and professionals. The more you hear it, the more you believe it. The more you believe it, the more you believe in yourself and act the part. Passion leads to success.

My Project

We are lucky to have a great group of students who love to learn in a way that allows them to express their creativity and understanding. We spend time learning units in all subjects, integrating them as we can to show cohesion of learning and cross-disciplinary understanding.

In order for students to progress forward with planning and implementing projects to display their learning in a tactile way, they need basic supplies like paint, clay, tape and glue.

We have some supplies, but as time passes and students gain momentum with their excitement, supplies are used and must be replenished.

We recently received stop animation kits for students to create animations about scenes in social studies, science and language arts. They are displaying their knowledge and "reteaching" by "acting" out the scenes using claymation and of course that requires... clay!

Each unit ends in a culminating project that students select, plan, implement and ultimately present in a symposium-style event. So much learning is going on with these students and supplies are the necessary means to keep their brains expanding.
