Putting Some STEAM in to Physics!

My students need a dozen unique textbook called Making Things Move to supplement their STEAM based physics class. The kids will use it to turn complex physics concepts into working robots.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are moving full STEAM ahead with an integrated arts and physics class next year. We will gather the brightest and most creative students into one room and teach them to build functional, moving creature robots of their own design based on physics and biological adaptations of animals.

Students from our school come from several different walks of life.

We have a high percentage of English learners, over 50% of our population qualifies for free lunch under the Title 1 program, and many graduates are the first in their families to attend college. Our school boasts high test scores and award winning programs in the arts, speech and debate and agriculture. We offer a wide variety of AP and IB classes, as well as ROP career readiness programs. Even though the students come from diverse backgrounds, there is a sense of community and support throughout the campus. There is a large population of "triple threat" students - those enrolled in honors classes, that play sports and are involved in the arts. Our hopes are to scoop up those kids and give them an opportunity to shine.

My Project

This is not a traditional science class and so no traditional textbooks really fit the course. We will be supplementing the physics text with several different sources, including the Making Things Move: DIY Mechanisms for Inventors, Hobbyists, and Artists book I am requesting. It is the perfect guide for beginning tinkerers. It gives excellent tips and guides for materials, tools and diagrams to help the students in their first foray into robot building.

This type of class has never been taught and we hope that the student going through it will realize that they can be scientist and artist at the same time.

There is a demand for creative problems solvers in the world today, and our hope is that we can create a new breed of student that can approach a problem from many directions and see multiple solutions. These books cannot be found in the traditional school library, just like how this will not be a traditional physics class.
