My students need keyboards compatible with our classroom ipads for empowering students through art and humanities with better written communications and analysing skills.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
At Gowan Science Academy we are constantly helping students become more effective and efficient in their decision making while at school. Do you need to stand up to work? Then stand up! Do you need to work with others? Then collaborate! They make choices to become more effective and more efficient.
I have thirty 3rd grade students who are incredibly dedicated and eager to learn each and every day!
I am so incredibly lucky to have students so excited about learning. Their ability to focus on the work makes me give them my all, gives me energy when I want to watch TV instead of planning lessons.
My Project
If a student does not have an external keyboard for their iPad, they use the keyboard that comes up on the screen. This glass keyboard is much more difficult for them to use as they have no texture to help guide their fingers. Perhaps even more troubling is that the keyboard on the screen often covers the image they are trying to write on. It is simply not very EFFECTIVE. Another issue is EFFICIENCY. Typing on the glass is painfully slow. An activity that would take 10 minutes on an external keyboard takes 20+ minutes on the screen keyboard, and perhaps even longer if the keyboard covers the image. We could move along faster, thus learning more, if we had external keyboards. Finally we are aware that this will be the first year our students are going to take the annual standardized test using their iPads. The test makers STRONGLY RECOMMEND the use of an external keyboard. We need every ADVANTAGE possible for empowering students through art and humanities to demonstrate their learning.
Having the right tool for the job is essential to empowering students through art and humanities.
The more accurate and efficient they are the more we can teach! Regarding standardized tests, many decisions are based upon their scores: placement in special programs, remediation, high school tracks, etc. If they have the best tools available our students can show what they know. Decisions made about those test results will be accurately tailored for each child. This is absolutely life-changing!
