Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a large diverse public high school in a big city. We are part of a STEMM (Science Technology Engineering Math Medicine) magnet and English Language Arts is a place where students can explore how the arts intersect with all that science. In our classrooms they have the opportunity to be surrounded by many different people with unique stories.

My students are intelligent, inquisitive, and enthusiastic about their studies.

They get excited when we use project-based learning to deepen connections between literature, current events, history, and STEMM-related issues. They care deeply about the future they are charged with shaping, and I am continually impressed with how eager they are for ways of improving our world.

My Project

My students need larger context for the hot button issues they scroll past on their social media. Being informed members of our society helps them better engage in the work of improving it.

Upfront Magazine is one of the most engaging current event publications for young people I've ever used.

Students are drawn to the timely, controversial, compelling stories, and when they are fueled by greater understanding their writing, reading, and thinking improve.

With a class set of these magazines, students will get to learn about young people who are trying to change the world for the better, issues behind the current election, and STEMM-related real-world problems. This project will help students build cross-curriculum connections and make them more deeply committed to how they too can make a difference when armed with knowledge.
