Putting Pencils to Paper: Support Mr. Larsen's 7th Grade Class
Help me give my students basic classroom necessities like pencils, erasers, and a classroom pencil sharpener, along with handy diagrams like multiplication charts for their binders, materials for classroom bulletin boards, and a holder for student cellphones.
My students are a diverse collection of resilient, tenacious, and ambitious kids. 46.7% of my students identify as Latinx, 17.2% identify as African American, 19.5% identify as White, 6.8% identify as Native American, 1.1% identify as Asian/Pacific Islander, and the remaining 8.6% identify as multiracial. In other words, my school will be home to a wide array of backstories, identities, and heritages that will contribute to the learning of the whole student body.
I also know that many of my students come from disadvantaged households, but that every one of them has ambitious goals for themselves and the drive to achieve those goals.
99% of my students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, and many of them will be coming into school far below grade level standards in math and reading; over 25% are also English language learners, creating yet another obstacle to an equitable and inclusive education. Yet I know that all of my kids have great potential, and past years have shown that students in our math program are capable of two years' worth of content growth in a single year, given the opportunity to do so.
My Project
In a mere week and a half I will have the privilege of beginning my first year teaching 7th grade math at Hale Junior High here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Depending on registration numbers, I will have upwards of 200 students in my classroom everyday, and I aim to provide each and every one of my kids with the support they need. However, power of will can only go so far, and the basic necessities listed in this project will go a long way towards helping my students achieve their best this year.
Having a fully stocked and decorated classroom not only allows my students to complete their work, but it also shows them that they are valued members of our community.
Every student deserves the opportunity to show their greatness, and by donating to my classroom you can do just that for my future mathematicians.
