This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." - Benjamin Franklin
One way my students love to learn is through interacting and sharing with one another.
My students receive ample opportunity to work with their partners and/or groups, but some seating arrangements and lack of space often times make it difficult to move around. Providing spacious areas and various learning style options will lead my students to develop better learning experiences and understandings of the concepts being taught in class as native and non-native English speakers.
My students are enthusiastic fifth graders who are excited for their final year in elementary school. They are well-behaved and highly motivated to learn. Their positive attitude enables them to be focused hard workers. My class is made up of 30% English Language Learners which has me using various teaching methods to help them improve in the English language along with mastering the other fifth grade standards including the Common Core Standards. We still lack basic school supplies, furniture, and equipment, but it doesn't deter my students from being academically successful.
My Project
I have 34 students, which means numerous desks and chairs. We lack the space to easily walk around. My students come in all shapes and sizes which means our current desks and chairs are old and do not fit my students' needs adequately. The Flex-Space Mobile Round Table will be used in conjunction with the Flex-Space Comfy Round Classroom Carpet so that students can sit on the floor. Students will sit at the Flex-Space Mobile Rectangular Table as an alternative to their traditional desks.
My students need to feel in control of their learning while also sitting at a place where they feel they are able to focus, therefore I'd like to implement flexible seating.
This will allow my students of all sizes to find a place in a spacious classroom to sit and feel comfortable without worrying about bumping into their partners, their chair breaking, their knees touching the bottom of their desk, or being unable to see the board clearly. Once they find a place in the classroom where they are able to pay attention and feel comfortable, they will be more engaged, ready to learn, and able to get their work done. These mobile tables will not only allow me to move the tables around the room where I see fit, but it will also allow students to easily work in small groups that may require space, such as problem solving, using manipulatives, and performing experiments. Choosing their own appropriate learning spot will enable them to be motivated and responsible for their own academic learning.
