This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The middle school that I work at is part of the Parent Teacher Home Visit Program. As part of this program, teachers visit homes of students to meet parents in a non-threatening, cordial manner. Teacher partners share an insight into how a routine day goes for their child/children and answer any questions parents may have.
An essential component of the home visit is to share the hopes and dreams that parents have for their child/children as well as the dreams students have for themselves.
Approximately, 39 % of the students are English Learners, who come from home that speak over 10 different languages. Consequently, most of these students are timid in regards to speaking a second language. Engaging in personalized visits and conversations helps students and family feel welcome in our school
My Project
Having personalized hole punchers and mechanical pencils will help the students organize their school work and increase their capacity for success. During COVID-19, students lost their ability to keep organized as the majority of their learning was virtual. Having to reteach organizational skills remains a foundational skill that needs to be revisited this year.
While conducting personalized home visits with students and their families, teacher partners will emphasize the importance of organizational skills and encourage parents to support the school-home communication efforts.
