My students need reading, math, and science games to reinforce fundamental skills, giving them a fun way to practice what we have learned.

My Students
"I LOVE MATH!" These words are often uttered by my enthusiastic and playful third graders. We have recently started to implement math centers that use games to reinforce their math learning. However, we don't have similar games to use in reading and science.
My students are some of the most ambitious and outgoing eight-and-nine-year-olds that you will ever meet.
They have more energy than ComEd! Boys outnumber the girls in my class, so the more hands on we are about our learning, the better. Any chance we get we roll up our sleeves to get our hands dirty.
Even though our school is in a rough neighborhood, and most of my students are on the free lunch program, you wouldn't know it coming into our classroom. The colorful wall displays show the high-level thinking at work. Our desks are in pods so that students can work together, and their favorite time of day is when they get to play. It doesn't matter the game, my students love having a chance to play it.
My Project
I am requesting sets of games, mostly board games, that target reading, language, math, and science skills. This grant is particularly exciting to me because it will allow my students to do what they love most: play! At the same time they will be gaining invaluable skills in reading, math, and science. These sets of games are made for different skills in those subject areas. They will allow me to split up my diverse learners into strategy learning groups, having them work on the skills they need to be supported in most, while allowing me to pull groups of students to work with me on other skills. An added bonus is that playing together gives my students practice in the social skills and community building that our class has been working hard on all year.
These games will have a tremendous impact on the learning of my students.
It will allow them to practice fundamental skills they need to work on, build community through working and playing together, and provide options for them to do while I meet with small learning groups. All that, and it will give my students another reason to say, "I LOVE SCHOOL!"
