No matter what job you have, you used communications to get there. In this newly-required 10th Grade Communications course, students strive to improve their written and oral communication skills, as well as their technological literacy and career preparedness. Through learning to self-advocate, thoughtfully express themselves, and speak clearly and directly, their life-chances will improve.
This year, my students will be making video-based Public Service Announcements about a topic of their choosing. After studying advertising techniques and basic videography, they'll select groups and causes. Whether they hope to tackle anything from littering to teen pregnancy, they'll work to make a high-quality video capable of swaying their peers. And with a school-wide audience on the morning announcements, it is my hope that their good efforts will pay off.
The problem is, our rural school has a small tax base and struggles with budgetary challenges that make purchasing video and audio equipment a low priority. For my students to produce high-quality work, they need access to headphones for video editing. Because they'll be working in pairs to manipulate editing software, they need headphone splitters so they can operate collaboratively from the same computer. With these relatively small investments, I'll be able to ensure that these students - and many more in the future - are able to pick up real-world, college-preparatory skills, while investing time and effort into improving their community.
With your support, my students can enrich their technological prowess, hone their careful editing skills, and take a stand in favor of bettering the community in which they live. This type of project-based learning lets students at all levels work toward improvement, and prepares learners for the more independent study they'll experience in college and beyond. With your donation, they'll experience success that will have a lasting effect on their learning, their life-chances, and their community.
