This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I instruct an enthusiastic group of students from the inner city of Chicago. My students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, but many of them come from homes where are the caretaker for their younger siblings. Many of my freshmen students are coming from middle schools where science was not a priority and not offered as a subject.
Despite the obstacles faced at home, at school, or on the journey between the two, my students arrive to class with a hunger for knowledge.
My Project
In his book "Closing the Attitude Gap", Baruti Kafele speaks of the importance of having an environment where learning is fostered. He states how he used his classroom to "create a classroom climate and culture that shaped my students' attitudes". I hope to do the same for my students. With the posters, I want the walls of my classroom to speak encouragement and edification to my students as I do the same standing before them. With these posters and theses supplies, my students will be able to be inspired and share that inspiration, thereby inspiring others. Students will be able to share their ideas and their learning with the white boards I have requested.. The pens and pencils will ensure that they are prepared each day for class.
