Put Some Chrome On It: Part 2

My students need two Chromebooks to take the beyond the walls of our classroom and prepare them for the digital workforce.

My Students

My students are crazy about technology! They love when lessons involve scanning QR codes, playing interactive games, or getting the chance to create with Chromebooks. Many of our students do not have access to technology outside of school. Our school and community work hard to provide our students with the materials and opportunities they need to be successful. We want them to have every chance for success possible!

We have a unique community.

Many of my students go home to cows and chickens hanging out in their backyards. The parents in our community are hard workers who often work third shift to provide for their families, but still find time to participate in our school activities. Local business leaders can often be seen having lunch with students, acting as mentors. People who visit our school tell us that they can tell how much our school and community care for our students.

My Project

My students love using technology to enhance our lessons. With the Chromebooks, more students will be able to rotate on Reflex Math. This program helps each student become fluent in basic math facts, a necessary foundation for all other math skills. Students love the math games and I love the ability how it is tailored towards each individual students to review the exact facts they need until they've mastered them. I can see reports that let me know exactly how each student is doing.

The Chromebooks will also allow students to access programs that foster their love of reading.

I use Accelerated Reader as an incentive program. Students feel success when they take tests on their books and receive applause from their classmates each week as they add stickers to their reading charts. Struggling readers would be able to use audio books on Epic and TumbleBooks. Students love practicing vocabulary on Quizlet, but we do not have enough Chromebooks to play Quizlet Live. The game involves teams on computers competing to correctly identify the meaning of Social Studies and Science words.

These are just a handful of examples of programs we will use. The most important use for our Chromebooks is to level the playing field for my students. They do not all go home and have access to technology. Many other schools in our district have already gone one-to-one or have families that can afford to keep up with the latest devices. When my students graduate, they will need to be tech savvy to compete with others in the job market. It is important for students to begin learning computer skills early on.
