Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Two, Four, Six, Eight who do we appreciate? We appreciate students that feel empowered to have some degree of choice and control in their classroom.
My kindergarten students from Mission Hills, California are ready to learn, move, wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain.
Flexible seating helps keep young minds more alert and focused. Giving students choices about their physical classroom space teaches them higher-order thinking.

Outside of our classroom is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world full of choices. How can we expect our students to solve problems and make choices independently if we constantly solve their problems and make their choices for them?
My Project
I am transforming my classroom in an effort to make learning more student-centered. Flexible seating builds a sense of community, gives students choices, and allows them to focus and work hard on the task at hand.
The bean bags, pillows, and floor seats will give students choices in what kind of learning works best for them and help them to work collaboratively, communicate, and elevate their engagement in the class.
Currently, the only seating choices my students have are sitting at their desks, sitting on the floor, or sitting on bath mats. I would like to bring in some comfortable furniture that will give them more flexible choices.
