Put First Things First--Self-Regulation to Help Focus
Help me give my students books, breathing balls, and activities that will support them in regulating their emotions and attention so they can take charge of their learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a large, public, inner-city school in the Bronx. My students are wonderful third graders who struggle with learning due to learning, language, attentional or emotional needs. Learning a typical curriculum, differentiated to minimize the effects of their disabilities, the students are becoming problem solvers, reflective communicators, and active citizens of the school, community, and world. Most of my students have been learning remotely for a year and a half. Many have expressed excitement and anxiety about returning to in-person learning.
This fall will be unlike any other and I want to be prepared for any social-emotional issues that may come up after 1 and 1/2 years at home.
My Project
This year, my wonderful students are facing challenges--gaps in learning academic and social skills as well as having to relearn how to operate within the school structure and expectations. The beginning of the year is when we learn about each other and begin to create our supportive classroom community.
The books in my cart will help me to create the socially emotionally supportive classroom so that we can do the important work of learning.
The breathing balls will give my students a manipulative to use as they practice deep breathing as a calming and focusing strategy. Students must feel safe, supported and have calming strategies as they grapple with some of the discomforts of being challenged by new academic concepts and skills.
