Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I love my students because they come from a rich patchwork of cultures and experiences. Many are English learners whose families have made the courageous choice to start a new life in this country, while others have grown up right here in our gritty, vibrant city. My students are bright, curious, and deeply creative. They love to make art and engage with a great story.

Yet, like many children today, they have grown up surrounded by digital devices from an early age.

Most spend long hours on screens—both in school and at home—and have few opportunities for hands-on, imaginative play.

My students need engaging, creative materials to draw them away from the constant pull of digital media. For the past two years, we’ve had a weekly Digital-Free Playtime. The materials from this project—such as watercolor pencils, paintbrushes, air-dry clay, and beads—will help me continue to offer a wide variety of screen-free activities that spark joy and creativity. A laminator will allow us to preserve students’ artwork and writing, turning their work into durable keepsakes they can be proud of.

Reading physical books is another challenge. Last year, I introduced Finish This Book, where I’d read the first few chapters of a series aloud and invite students to continue reading if it sparked their interest. The books in this project are the next installments in the most popular series from last year—books they’ve been eager to get their hands on.
