My students need 4 tablets for our P.U.S.H. (Pushing Up Standards High) Reading Comprehension Technology Center in order to increase the rigor and comprehension in Reading.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year is special because the majority of my students once were my kindergarten students. My biggest challenge with my students is getting them to develop their love for reading while being two grade levels behind. My goal is to PUSH the states' standards through technology based centers.
My students come for a low economic background where most of their parents are either incarcerated, deceased because of gang related violence, suffer from alcoholism or drug addiction, high school dropouts or lack an educational background pass high school.
But, there is a brighter light at the end of this tunnel where my school serves as a place where students can call their home away from home. With each loving teacher who goes the extra mile to ensure that our students are moving upward academically as well as socially. We believe our students will break the cycle of their community and are well on their way to become great leaders that will develop into role models one day. Besides their surroundings in their neighborhood,(government housing units that surround the school area), the students know they can come to school and be safe. The students feel safe because they know that the school teachers and staff all love and care for them as if they are our own children.
My Project
P.U.S.H. stands for pushing up standards high. With the states new common core standards, they are requiring our students to read more with comprehension in the 3rd grade. My students are required to read with understanding rather than learn to read. Students will be engaged in phonics based activities on the tablets that are level appropriate for each student in order to boost them up to their correct reading grade level by the end of the school year. During the duration the students are in D.I. (Differentiated Instructional Groups) they will be working on their individual missed phonics skills or phonological awareness skills that is currently causing them to be 2 or 3 grade levels behind. Each student will have about 20 minutes everyday to work and build on their individual missing skills during the classes DI rotation time after whole group instruction. The tablets will help to cover all the individual skills that each student needs in order to boost their confidence in reading.
Donations to the P.U.S.H.
Reading Technology Center project will improve my classroom by helping my students to bridge the gap of phonics & phonological awareness skills that they are missing from previous years. These are the skills that cause my students to be two grade levels behind. My students lives will change because they will now be more confident in reading & in comprehending the standards once they have mastered all their primary reading skills using technology programs.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
