My students need the parachute, stretchy band, and canopy scarves to create movement in community with each other. The cooperative blankets are necessary for those students who need a safe retreat, but yet participate in movement.

My Students
I teach music in a K-6 public school of 420 students in a town of about 13,000 in east central Missouri. The vast majority of the students are Caucasian, with approximately 2% of the population East Asian, Black, East Indian, or Hispanic and participate in our English Language Learners program. 51% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunches, with approximately 60 with some sort of Individualized Education Plan.
My building has students with special sensory and adaptive needs who are constantly "on the move".
These students have short attention spans and are fascinated by bright colors and objects. In order to keep them on-task as much as possible safely, unique movement props are essential.
By providing my students with props that are easily malleable and are not harmed if students put them in their mouths, my children with special needs can be involved in movement, get their wiggles going, and have fun with great textures and bright colors.
My Project
Students need to move. With the parachute, canopies, cooperative blankets, and stretchy bands, students will have a variety of movement props at their disposal to become less inhibited about creating movement. This is especially helpful for students with special needs.
My students with special needs will utilize these props to move in a focused area, either in community or in a safe space alone.
These students like to dart off impulsively, but with these props, they will be more enticed to work together with the group. However, if a student needs that "alone" time, the cooperative blanket is a wonderful option for him to feel alone, but also feel a part of the group and safe.
These props are also going to be made available to the rest of the student population in my school. After standard academic work, so many students need to move. Some need various options for movement because of restlessness. Movement props give students something to grasp, which helps with focus as well as interest. Props give students additional tools for creative expression.
