My Students
Our inner-city school is comprised of over 650 students in grades Pre-K-5. More than 33% of our students are special needs in nature. The majority of our students receive free lunch. My students have come from all around the world, from many different and often difficult situations. They hold the American Dream but need the tools to make them successful. Their challenges go beyond the educational setting. We look to inspire our students to chase their dreams. Each student hopes to improve through mind, spirit, and body. Although my students face many obstacles, I have always felt that my gymnasium classroom has been a sports sanctuary. Students feel at home and look forward to each class period.
My Project
I am an elementary physical education teacher in grades K-5. Our inner-city school building is over 100 years old. Since the pandemic, my approach to physical education classes has changed. I have had to recreate activities that students can do while wearing masks, as well as to account for physical distancing. The need for masks in the gym certainly prohibits our ability to run, jump, and play the way we did before. In the gymnasium, there are no windows that can be opened to allow for outside air to circulate.
In an effort to keep the students and staff safe during these challenging times, we are requesting a large air purifier.
