This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When I think of a book that clearly shows pure imagination, I think of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. Understanding the art of fantasy writing can be challenging to students, but to give them an opportunity to read and experience it enables them to be imaginative. This in turn will help them in writing their own fantasy stories.
I am a third grade teacher working at a school in South Central Los Angeles. Ninety-seven percent of our students receive free and reduced lunch and we are sixty-eight percent English Language Learners.
With the recent trend in education to push reading and math, many times we as teachers are challenged to find time to read core literature with our students. Students need to understand that while we are learning to read, we are also reading to learn. Bringing a core literature book to our classroom will help my students grow as readers and writers as well.
My hope is to use Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as a spring board in getting my students to write creatively and get their imagination running wild. I hope to also incorporate drama and music in the reading through the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Play book. I would like to then have my students perform it as a play as well.
In order to achieve this I will need 21 copies of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book and 21 copies of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory play. Your generosity will help my students experience pure imagination!
