Help me give my students Montessori toys and math games that engage and develop communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking skills.
My transitional kindergarten four-year-old students love exploring the world through hands-on experiences. It is a primary goal to provide students with resources to actively engage and equip students with 21st-century science skills. Twenty percent of our students are English language learners and approximately forty percent of our population receives free or reduced lunch.
This DonorsChoose.org project will provide 32 students with materials that provide hands-on exploration with science and mathematical concepts while building critical thinking and social-emotional skills.
I am thoughtful of selecting items that also build a foundation for Next Generation Science and Engineering Standards to close the knowledge gap.
My Project
In the National Education Association document, “Preparing 21st Century Students for a Global Society” (2012), sixteen states and many educational organizations worked collaboratively to determine four essentials skills for the future workforce. The four C’s are communication, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.
Children most effectively learn communication, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking through intentional and active hands-on play.
The items in this project support these premises. Montessori toys build on children's ability to focus and self regulate through trial and error while creatively problem solving and gaining essential critical thinking skills. Board games engage and stimulate children while they practice essential skills such as communication, collaboration and problem-solving with peers.
