Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a low income school. My children come from very many diverse backrounds, with many English as a Second Language (ESL) children from Mexico, Russia, and Thailand, just to name a few. There are some language barriers with these children.
My children love to make stick puppets and paper plate puppets to act out and retell stories. Currently, we have a flannel board with flannel board pieces that I purchased. The children love this center because they play and pretend. My students are constantly asking for puppets to do similar activities.
Retelling stories is a new objective this year that the children are assessed on. This seems quite easy, but for ESL children, it is very difficult. The children need lots of practice in telling stories in the correct order the events happened, summarizing only the important parts of the story, identifying the setting, main characters, the problem in a story and the solution.
I would love to have real puppets and a puppet theater for the children to use during center time and to help them retell stories and practice the skills listed above.
The puppets I am requesting include curriculum areas we study (community helpers, fairy tales, folk tales, and animals). The puppet theater has shelves so the children can not only retell stories, but can use the theater to play store, etc.
The puppet theater requested is a great addition to any dramatic play area. It includes a curtain rod, curtains, 3 shelves, write-on/wipe-off side panels, and a wipe-off non-toxic marker.
The puppets requested are all 12" puppets with movable mouths and arms. The set of Community Helpers Puppets includes police officer, doctor, firefighter, teacher, chef, mail carrier, nurse, and astronaut. The set of Storytelling Puppets includes fairy, dragon, knight, prince, princess, and jester. The set of Big Mouth Puppet Pals includes cow, pig, duck, bear, dog, and frog.
