My Students
A. Elementary is a Pre-k through 8th grade school with nearly 300 students in rural Oklahoma between Sapulpa and Sand Springs. Many of our students come from low socioeconomic families and have traumatic backgrounds. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch daily.
My Project
I took my first puppet to a pre-k class three weeks ago. Since that moment, I have ceased to exist as a single person for my pre-k students. All they want is for me to bring back my puppet and talk to them again. Puppets bring a whole new element to storytelling and are real attention getters for young students. I would like to have more high quality puppets to bring to lessons to enhance social emotional learning for my students. Additionally, puppets can be useful for shy children to express their feelings. Sometimes the puppet can help them say something they can't by themselves.
The How To Teach Your Dragon series is a big hit with my students.
I have one book I read with a class and they loved it. With this grant, I can bring more dragon SEL to their lives.
