My Students
Our inner-city school is comprised of over 650 students in grades Pre-K-5. More than 33% of our students are special needs in nature. The majority of our students receive free lunch. My students have come from all around the world, from many different and often difficult situations. They hold the American Dream but need the tools to make them successful. Their challenges go beyond the educational setting. We look to inspire our students to chase their dreams. Each student hopes to improve through mind, spirit, and body. Although my students face many obstacles, I have always felt that my gymnasium classroom has been a sports sanctuary. Students feel at home and look forward to each class period.
My Project
Puppets are a great tool for capturing the attention of young children. Teaching sports history is an important component of any Physical Education curriculum. My goal is to bring these two elements together.
In my gymnasium, I am planning to teach my students about significant events in sports history through puppetry.
Some key events include Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in our own Jersey City, Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth's home run record, and Billie Jean King playing against Bobby Riggs in the battle of the sexes. Imagine the curtain going up in our mini "broadway" theater and the engagement and learning that will take place.
