Puppet Theater to Support Oral Language Development and Social Skills

Help me give my students a Puppet Theater with a variety of puppets that will support language development in many ways, including: vocabulary and grammar, storytelling, speech-language concepts, and conversational skills.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Learning through play is essential for our children's education. Puppets can portray different personalities with various traits and cultural influences. Puppets are an engaging way to model self-regulation and emotions for children. Puppets can show joy or sadness, be naughty or nice, shy or afraid, and can demonstrate consequences and outcomes in lessons.

This Puppet Theater and the variety of puppets will provide my students with engaging and stimulating opportunities that will help develop not only their oral language development, but will also help them with listening skills, understanding emotions, developing motor skills, and engaging in active participation and turn-taking.

In my TK-1st grade mild/moderate Special Education class, more than half of the students are Autistic, nonverbal, have language delays or impairments, or have other intellectual learning disabilities. Puppetry has a special ability to connect with neurodivergent children and can be an effective learning tool and bridge for communication and expression.

Puppets can act as models for behavior and emotional regulation, providing students with opportunities to role-play and practice following rules, making better choices, and how to fix our mistakes.
