This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Each year we have a little more than 120 kids compete in math team competitions in grades 4-8. Math team competition is one of the highlights of our entire school year. To make math team extra special, I like to give the students a pencil pouch with fun math-themed pencils, fun erasers, and a couple of snacks. It's really the little things that make competition special for the kids.

For kids who are not into sports, Math Team may be the only team they participate in all year, and it gives them a sense of community and belonging--and motivation to learn new math skills.

We are running really low on the punny math pencils that need to be special-ordered. This project request will be enough pencils to last a couple of years of math competition.

These pencils have phrases like "THE ONLY CALCULATOR I NEED" and "FR-ACTION AND ADD-VENTURE" and "GEOMETRY KEEPS ME IN SHAPE" plus a box of the perennial favorite...the digits of Pi.

Each time students compete they get a personalized pencil pouch with 2 math pencils, a fun eraser, a couple of snacks, and their team/room assignment. Kids tell me every year how special they feel to get these as part of the competition.

Many of my students come from disadvantaged backgrounds. During the day, I teach enrichment groups for gifted students. These groups also serve high-achieving students who are not identified as "gifted" because we try to be as inclusive as possible.

In our rural district, most of the families work in agriculture. Over 80% of our school children are of Hispanic descent, and many of them are English Language Learners. Most of our students participate in the free lunch program.
