Every time my speakers cut out or crackle, I have students who complain! One student in particular notices every single time. Monica always makes a comment about my outdated speakers (purchased in 2008!). Monica is one of my students who tries her best to receive as many points as possible on every single assignment. After receiving a graded piece of work, she resubmits it to try to earn more, even if it's only 1 point- she is a real go-getter! I enjoy her humor when commenting on my "antique" speakers but I would like to do something about it.
My students are at an under-resourced school and many of them come from disadvantaged homes. Despite their diverse backgrounds, most come to school with a desire to learn. It is apparent to my students and me that they deserve better when it comes to sound quality and their education!
I love using technology in my classroom! Kids today are surrounded by technology whether it is academic or social. It grabs their attention and can be a real motivator. With wireless speakers, students will be able to hear no matter where they are in the classroom. Every day I use a Keynote presentation to engage my students. Music plays as they get settled into their seats and their minds are guided into "Biology mode". Short videos are used as an activator to give kids a push to have conversations with their tablemates about relevant science topics.
My current "antique" speakers have travelled with me through three school districts and have gotten a bit bruised, banged, and over-used along the way. There are too many wires that cause the speakers to crackle and the sound output doesn't always work. Students will finally have the opportunity to hear everything that is being shared without the frustration of plug-in speakers not working.
In Their Own Words
I want to be able to hear everything that is being said when a video or music is playing through the speakers. Ms. Kasai uses her computer every day to show us cool slides with pictures, videos, and other things with music. It is so frustrating when we are trying to hear the audio and we keep hearing crackling! Now I love my teacher but her speakers have got to go!
This project will allow me to bring positive change to the classroom for every single student that takes Biology with Ms. Kasai. She told us how the principal told her last year that he was going to have wall-mounted speakers put into her classroom and have her projector ceiling mounted. Well, things tend not to happen at our school and we can't wait forever so I wanted to take matters into my own hands! I am going to ask my parents to donate to our project and spread the word to all of my friends.
This project is important to me and my school community because it is a way for us to be more engaged at school. So many of my classmates get distracted so easily but when they have something to look at on the screen and something to listen to, they actually pay attention! There is a problem of inequity in our school and community. Some classes get more resources and some schools get more funding. It is unfair that some classrooms have a Smartboard and air-conditioning and we don't even have good quality speakers! I don't know how it's all figured out. What I do know it that our class will be more focused if we get enough donations for this project.
