My Students

Latin may be thousands of years old, but my students live in a multimedia world. I need speakers so that I can play the audio to the amazing videos available on the Internet and DVDs. Believe it or not, the Classical World is vividly alive on multimedia. I sadly lack the sound system.

My students are bright teenagers who come from all over the city.

Our school is what most places call a magnet school. The students must pass a test to enter, and much is expected of them. Most of our students are on free or reduced cost lunch. We are a Title I school. All this means that our students are poor. School, not home, is their primary place for interacting with technology. These kids are great and very smart. We have a 100% college acceptance rate. But, sadly, we lack resources. We make do, but I hope I can provide more for them.

My Project

I am requesting two different (but related) items. First is a pair of speakers for the classroom laptop. I became acutely aware of the need for speakers this week when a student made a googledoc presentation. She had embedded a video in her slide show, but we were unable to hear it as I only have the built in computer speaker Second is a portable audio system which will allow me to project my voice when we are on field trips. Being heard over the din of 100 students is tough without using a bullhorn/megaphone. This item is more discrete.

I will use the laptop speakers every week.

After a quiz, I want to show a ten minute video from the Internet of what our next topic will be. In today's mutlisensual world, a video is far more memorable than a list on a chalkboard. The portable audio system will be used for field trips. I plan about 2 big trips a year. The system will allow me to spare my "teacher voice."
