Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Would you like to study decimals, percentages, fractions and volume from a sixth grade math textbook? My sixth grade math classes wouldn't like to, either. So please help me buy some extra materials to liven up our math lessons.
I teach math to approximately 100 sixth-grade students at a K-8 center in South Florida.
Most of my students speak a language other than English at home. Like kids everywhere, they learn best by playing. Hands-on, fun games help them internalize their math lessons.
My Project
These games include bingo and domino sets to help children learn multiplication, division, percentages, decimals and fractions and board games with questions about every aspect of the sixth grade math curriculum. If I stand in front of the smart board and talk to the students about math, their eyes glaze over after ten minutes. They will happily play these games for 30 or 40 minutes. And, of course, while they play, they learn.
These games teach, entertain and motivate my students.
I already use some hands-on games in my classes and I know that these games will also be a success. Please help me interest my students in this vital subject.
