This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students lack an afterschool activity which challenges their intelligence and enhances the skills necessary for success in math, science, and more.
Our school is one of the largest in the state, and our scores in Algebra and Biology are behind.
We lack an afterschool activity which is both appealing and educational. Chess is an activity which I experienced first-hand as a youth myself and I know it helped me and will help others with their math and science skills. The game promotes stressing and enhancing problem solving and critical thinking skills which are skills which are essential to being a successful college and career-ready student. Fourteen students attended the initial interest meeting, and others mentioned to me their interest.
My Project
With the 12 chess sets and spare pieces I am requesting, students will be able to enhance their learning and help the community. There has already been interest in going out to local libraries to promote involvement in the school and visit local elementary schools to teach younger students how to play chess.
Chess is a game that is over 1000 years old.
It takes minutes to learn and years to master. It enhances learning and becomes a lifelong activity. Please give my students the opportunity to discover this incredible game.
