Puerto Rican Piragua Party Basics

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Ice Cream treats are always fun and I would love to create an interactive learning experience during our Caribbean unit study in June, focusing on piraguas from Puerto Rico. As part of this hands-on activity, I would like to provide my students with autism the opportunity to create and enjoy piraguas, a traditional Puerto Rican cone shaped frozen ice shaving treat served in cups with straws. In lieu of the traditional ice block and shaver, I plan to use snow cone machines to shave the ice cubes which will allow for both functionality and full inclusivity.

Making piraguas will not only immerse students in the culture and traditions of Puerto Rico but also help foster social skills and teamwork as they work together to make and serve this icy treat to one another.

Through this interactive project, students will practice following directions, taking turns, and enhancing fine motor skills while engaging in a fun and educational experience. Students will have a choice to order different flavors and can choose a single flavor or make a creative combination of their own. Ultimately, making these delicious frozen treats will serve as fruitful language, social, and sensory activity that provides a meaningful connection to the cultural study of Puerto Rico and understanding of desserts from the Caribbean.
