This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are amazing! They attend a low-income, urban charter high school on the north side of Chicago. 25% of our student body qualifies for special education services. Our students speak a total of 40 different languages and come from neighborhoods all over the city; we proudly hold the status as the MOST diverse charter school in the city!
As a college-preparatory high school, students are busy honing their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills in an effort to prepare for life after high school, which is incredibly exciting since most will be the first from their families to attend college .
With the support of our college counselors and various school initiatives to expose them to college life starting in 9th grade, we are starting to see more and more students attend four year universities all over the country.
One thing that makes my students incredibly special is how they value each other's differences. Our school has a high percentage of special needs students, and the student body supports these students on a daily basis. The students and the school community also celebrate cultural differences and refer to our community as "the world at home."
My Project
We are thrilled that our school was able to make space for us to open up a writing lab this year. We serve all grade levels, and students visit us during their study hall period, lunch, or after school in order to receive support to improve their written work across content areas. After conferencing with a writing teacher, students apply the feedback, edit their work, and then are ready to print. Unfortunately, the writing lab does not have a functioning printer; therefore, students have difficulty publishing their work.
By donating to our project, you will allow students to print and publish their writing assignments with ease.
Not only will they be prepared for class by having their assignment ready to turn in, but they will also feel an incredible sense of accomplishment when they walk out of our writing lab.
